India’s 10 Popular Fish Species- India Fish Export Market

 As per India Export Data, the export value of fish and fishery products from India amounted to over 441 billion India rupees. Fishing in India is a major industry employing 14.5 million people. India rank second in aqua culture and third in fisheries production.

Fish and Fishing remain central to Vizag’s economy and when it comes to marine exports, Vizag port is considered as one of the top contributors. Here are India’s 10 popular fish species:

1. Ribbonfish: RibbonFish is the most exported fish species by India, contributing a share of 27.3% in 2020 among fish varieties followed by croaker, pomfret, jack and sole. As per India Import Data, China is the main importer of Indian ribbon fish, accounting for 20% of the total fish exports from India. The largest fish category in India’s fish export market is frozen fish. The exports for this fish in 2020 totalled US$ 93.8 million, contributing 27.3% share of total exports of fish species.

2. Croaker: Croaker fish is India’s second largest exporter fish species, contributing 14.2% to total fish exports in 2020. India shipped croaker fish worth US$ 48.8 million among which the highest number of shipments valued at US$ 44 million to China. Importers of croaker fish are South Korea, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Vietnam.

3. Pomfret: Pomfret fishes are perciform fishes belonging to the family Bramidae. The export value of fishes exported by India is worth US$ 47.3 million to the world in the year 2020. China was the major importer of Pomfret fish and it contributed about 8% of the total value of fish shipments. Major importer countries are Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

4. Jack: Jackish belongs to the family of Carangidae and can be found in temperate and tropical portions of Indian Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. India exports of jackfish valued at US$ 34.5 million in 2020. This fish was imported by China the most.

5. Sole: Sole fishes are also popular fish species of India that contributed about 3% to the total value of fish exports in 2020. The export value of sole fish was US$ 10.6 million and China stood as top importer.

6. Surimi: India exported US$ 7.2 million worth of surimi fish to the world in 2020. South Korea is the major importer of the fish, followed by China, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan.

7. Grouper: Groupers are large mouthed heavy bodied fishes. India shipped grouper fishes worth US$ 5 million. The top importing countries were China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Taiwan.

8. Catla Fish:  Catla is the major South Asian freshwater fish in the carp family. Catla fish worth US$ 4.8 million was shipped by India to countries Bangladesh, Bhutan and Singapore.

9. Seer Fish: Seer fish is popular among countries of Indian subcontinent including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. India’s exports of Seer fish totalled US$ 4.3 million in 2020. China and Taiwan were top importers of Indian Seer fish.

10. Cod Fish:  India shipped codfish worth US$ 4.1 million and the country exported to major countries including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.
