How to Import Goods in Uganda? Procedure for Importing Goods

All those persons and entities who wish to import goods in Uganda can do so by following related streamline procedures set by government authorities. However as per the nature of the products certain goods for imports as per Uganda Import Data, may be subject to an authorization, license, rules of quality or packaging, standardization or special formalities. A registered trade with concerned license as per business is must for exporting and importing of commercial products from and into Uganda.

The Uganda Export Data department administered under and by Uganda revenue authority is responsible for levies taxes on goods efficiently, implementation of customs policies, facilitate legitimate trade and protection of society and legal economic activities in Togo.

The efficiency of customs clearance process depends on having valid documents, the accuracy of the information provided in the documents as well as promptness in submitting the documents and filing the required applications for the custom clearance.

The importer should ensure that they made all of the correct import documents that are required to get clear the customs formalities, satisfy all compliance and regulations. The privileges enjoyed by an importer for importing goods into Uganda are:

1. Importers who are registered under the authorized economic operator are entitled to faster clearance of their goods.

2. Warehousing of imported goods enables the importer to

• Look for funds to clear their tax  obligations at their convenience time by differing payment

• Acquiring guaranteed security of their good s on which customs duty has not yet been paid.

• Clearing part of the goods, in case they don’t have funds to pay customs duty on all warehoused goods, this allows for cash flow management.

• Gets an opportunity to transfer goods to another party while they are still in the warehouse.

• Repackaging the goods before clearance of customs duty.

• Importers of selected goods are entitled to different incentives under the exemption schedule of the EACCMA.

Things to take note of:

1. All the importers are required to use the services of a licensed clearing agent.

2. The warehousing period of goods is 270 days except for goods in duty free shops. New motor vehicles, wines and spirits are warehoused for a maximum of two years.

3. The clearing agent must submit genuine and authentic documentation relating to transaction to avoid delays and penalties.
