Even as the countries imposed sanctions after Ukraine invasion, international trade with Russia boomed this year. Russia is 26th largest trading partner with $28 billion goods trade. As per Global Import Export Data Online the greater part of Russia exports belongs to oil and petroleum products.
Other leading exports are natural gas, timber, fertilizers, machinery and equipments. As per Russia Import Data the country’s imports of foodstuffs and agricultural raw materials amounted to nearly 34 billion US dollars in 2021.
The main food imports are residues, and waste from food industries, oil cakes, feed components, oil seeds, animal or vegetable fats, and oils, beverages, cereals and other products. The country’s from which the food is imported are Germany, Italy, Belarus, France and China.
The country imports 40% of its food because it is not good at producing some of foodstuff its people like to eat – like diary, pork, wine and potatoes. In the year 2020, the country imported $119M of potatoes, becoming the 8th largest importer of potatoes in the world. The potato imports increased by 73% in 2021 and the country imported 546 thousand tons of potatoes which is 72.7% more than 2020. The increase in the potato imports was expected due to the low harvest in Russia because of weather conditions.
As per Russia Export Data the country is the largest exporter of wheat and an important exporter of barley and sunflower seed. The country is the major global supplier of key staples including wheat. Russia is the world’s largest exporter of oil to the global markets and the second-largest crude oil exporter behind Saudi Arabia.
The top countries to which Russia exports food are China, Turkey, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Russia exports barley to Saudi Arabia with a value of US$256.05 million during 2021. Barley is an important export item of Russia.
China and India remain the main destination for Russian crudes in the wake of Ukraine war accounting for 58% of all seaborne Russia crude exports. The country exported crude oil worth nearly 35.4 billion US dollars to China.
In 2022, the oil exports of Russia rose back above $20 billion in June despite lower shipments abroad because of a rise in energy prices. India and China buy cheaper oil from Russia. The country accounts for about 10% of the global oil production but its exports have been reduced since its invasion of Ukraine.
